Foi isto que quisemos?

(Was it this what we wanted?)

This piece is written for soprano solo, flute, clarinet, basson, guitar, harp, percussion (vibraphone, tam-tam), violin, viola and cello and lasts aproximatelly 7'30''.

"Foi isto que quisemos" was based on the first stanza of the poem "A noite" of José Mario Branco, a famous portuguese singer songwriter that played a big role in the portuguese revolution of 1974. José Mario Branco, inspired by the stillness of the night, reflects on society asking himself if this was what we wanted:

Em tudo o que já fomos

Está o que seremos

No fundo desta noite

Tocam-se os extremos

E se soubermos ver nos sonhos o processo

Os passos para trás não são um retrocesso

A noite é um sinal de tudo quanto fomos

Dos medos, dos mistérios

Das fadas e dos gnomos

Da ignorância pura

E da ciência irmã

Em que sendo passado

Já somos amanhã

A noite é o espaço vago

O tempo sem história
